Olton prepares for 42nd annual Sandhill Celebration

  The Olton Chamber of Commerce will host its 42nd annual Sandhill Celebration next week. This year’s schedule of events is packed from Aug. 3-6 for attendees to enjoy.   

On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the Olton Volunteer Ambulance Association will make burgers for attendees of the celebration.   

The rest of the week’s activities are as follows:    

An open house is scheduled at the Cavett Memorial Center from 2-5 p.m. There will be gospel singing at the Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. along with Chris Jones Ice Cream Social and Contest.  

 A raffle drawing for a White Mountain 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker will be held during Chris Jone’s Ice Cream Social. Raffle tickets are $10 per ticket.   

The Sandhill Pageant is set to start at 7 p.m. at the Olton High School Auditorium. Admission for the event is $3 per person.    

The annual Drag Main event will follow at 9 p.m.   

A dog show starts at the Pavilion at 5 p.m. Registration for that event will start an hour beforehand. Those interested in showing off their four-legged friend can enter them by paying a $5 registration fee per dog. During that show, there will be a raffle drawing for a dog treat basket. Tickets to enter are $5.   

A Volleyball Tournament will start at 6 p.m. that evening at Stiles Park.  Entry fee for each team is $40. Cash prizes will be presented to the top two teams. The deadline to enter is Aug. 3.  

At the same time, there will be a Cornhole Tournament at Stiles Horseshoe Park. Registration for that event starts at 5 p.m. A cash prize will be presented to the winners of the tournament.   

Arts and Crafts booths will be set up that night from 5-11 p.m. A bake sale with a premier cake auction is scheduled for 6:30. Proceeds from the bake sale will go towards the Olton Sandcrawl Museum.   

A raffle drawing for $500 in Olton Bucks will be held on Friday before the dance, which is scheduled from 7-11 p.m. with DJ Ferly. Tickets are $10 per ticket or six tickets for $50. Olton Bucks can be used with Olton Chamber of Commerce business members.  

Saturday is set to be the busiest day of the weeklong event.   

The Olton Lion’s Club will host a breakfast from 7 – 9 a.m. at the Ambulance Station (8th and Ave G).  Starting at 8 a.m., arts and crafts booths are set to open for the day.   

The W.B. Dickenson Memorial Parade is set to start at 10 a.m. The parade is going to go down Main Street.  Line-up for the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at 2nd St and Ave G.   

Stiles Park will be set for refreshing entertainment at 11 a.m. Dry and wet water slides will be available for kids at the park.   

Tickets are $1 for one slide or $10 for unlimited rides. These will all be open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.   

Starting at the same time is registration for the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament at Stiles Horseshoe Park. First pitch will start at 1 p.m. It will be a double elimination tournament, and the entry fee is $10 per person. Prizes will be given to the top three participants.   

A Car Show is set to start following the parade.  The cars will ride in the parade and then park in the Wellington State Bank parking lot.  Judging will take place about 11:15 a.m. with cash prizes for the top cars.     

The Sandhills Golf Scramble will begin at 1 p.m. down the road at the Olton Golf Course.    

The Olton Lion’s Club will host a fundraiser called the Tennis Ball Drop.  Tennis Balls can be purchased during Sandhills for $5 each.  Purchased tennis balls will be dropped at 2 p.m. at the OCCA Pavilion.   

Raffles for the following items will take place between 8-10 p.m.   

A Chicago Cutlery Insignia Steel 18-Piece Knife Set ($220 value) - tickets are $5 or six tickets for $25  

A Costway Inflatable Kid’s Bounce House ($320 value) - tickets are $10  

A Blackstone 30” Griddle with Hood & Counter Height Shelves ($399 value) - tickets are $25 per ticket or five for $100  

A 5-Piece Patio Fire Pit Set ($2,099 value) - tickets are $100  

A dance from 7-11 p.m. will conclude the Sandhill festivities. Tanner Lane will provide musical entertainment.
